Discover Fajita Taco Place

Walking into Fajita Taco Place feels like stepping into a neighborhood spot that knows exactly what it’s doing. I’ve eaten at plenty of taco joints around San Antonio, both as a local diner and while tagging along with friends who take their Tex-Mex very seriously, and this place stands out for its consistency. Located at 1816 W Thompson Pl, San Antonio, TX 78226, United States, it’s the kind of diner you return to because you already know your order will hit the table hot, fast, and full of flavor.

On my first visit, I watched the grill line work through a steady lunch rush. The fajita meat was cooked in small batches, which is something chefs often recommend to prevent moisture loss. According to food science research shared by the USDA, cooking proteins quickly over high heat helps seal in juices, and you can taste that here. The steak fajitas arrive sizzling, sliced thin, and seasoned just enough to let the meat do the talking. Chicken and shrimp options follow the same method, which explains why nothing feels dry or overworked.

The menu keeps things simple but smart. You’ll see tacos, fajita plates, combo meals, and family trays designed for sharing. That setup mirrors what the National Restaurant Association notes as a growing preference among diners: customizable meals without overwhelming choices. I usually go with the fajita taco combo because it lets you mix proteins and load up your tortillas the way you want. Fresh cilantro, chopped onions, grilled peppers, and house-made salsa are laid out so you can build each bite differently. One regular next to me called it best fajitas in town, and after a few visits, that didn’t sound like hype.

Reviews around town often mention value, and that’s accurate. Portions are generous without crossing into wasteful territory, which aligns with sustainable kitchen practices promoted by organizations like the James Beard Foundation. You’re not paying for fancy plating; you’re paying for food that respects tradition. The tortillas are warmed properly, never stiff, and the balance between meat and toppings feels intentional. I once brought a friend who usually skips fajitas because they’re too salty, and even she admitted the seasoning here was perfectly balanced flavor.

Service deserves a mention because it shapes the whole experience. Orders move quickly, and staff members know the menu well enough to suggest pairings or explain spice levels without sounding scripted. During one visit, I watched a staff member guide a first-time customer through the menu, explaining which tacos worked best for sharing and which sauces had more heat. That kind of interaction builds trust, something the CDC often highlights as key to positive dining experiences, especially in busy urban areas.

Location matters too. Being close to major roads makes this diner easy to swing by during lunch breaks or casual dinners. Parking is straightforward, and the atmosphere stays relaxed even when the place fills up. It’s not trying to be trendy, and that honesty comes through in every plate. You won’t find experimental fusion dishes here, but you will find reliable fajita tacos made the way locals expect them.

There are limits, of course. If you’re looking for a massive dessert menu or craft cocktails, this isn’t that kind of restaurant. The focus stays firmly on tacos, fajitas, and classic sides, and that narrow focus is exactly why it works. By sticking to what they do best, they’ve built a reputation supported by strong word-of-mouth and repeat customers. In a city known for Tex-Mex excellence, earning that loyalty says more than any flashy claim ever could.

  • Solid offerings, food is pretty good, prices a little on the high side while portions are on the smaller side.

  • Wow my daughter told me she loves the bean and cheese tacos because they always put lots of cheese.

  • These tacos are good, the corn tortilla they make is delicious. They taste just like the ones in Mexico. The beef fajita Mexicana w/cheese is a unique taco, it has sausage, green peppers and onions. It was greasy but it’s worth it. Never had that combination of taco. The chicharrón was spicy and soft. I called the order in and it was ready in 5 min. The staff was very nice and friendly. I also ordered a aqua Fresca pineapple and that was real. Sometimes restaurants use that fake powder stuff but this was legit.

  • Great Customer Service. Best Barbacoa in my Opinion in town. I am already Barbacoa lover, and I usually rate Mexican food by 2 things: Barbacoa and Tortillas Soup. They are

  • I have to say, these were the absolute best Country Ranchero breakfast tacos I have ever had. I didn't even need to put red sauce on them. They set me on fire! But it was the big chunks of onions and Jalapeños that made it so delicious! I will definitely stop in when I am in the area!
